Volunteers keep the Garden open for our community. The more volunteers there are, the more hours the Garden can be open. Volunteering is flexible and simply involves welcoming visitors for just ONE hour at a time. Some volunteers volunteer each week, and other less frequently. Become a volunteer.

Weekly Kids’ Yoga — Beginning Wednesday, April 20,  4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Kid’s Yoga has been designed especially for Elizabeth Street Garden to foster an appreciation for the Garden’s distinctive qualities. Kids will freeze in “strong statue” poses, learn about the life cycles of different Garden elements — seed to tree, caterpillar to butterfly, etc.; practice different “insect” poses;  and explore the sounds and other sensory qualities of the Garden through minimeditations, aiming to provide an opportunity for kids to connect to this beloved neighborhood space in a unique and meaningful way.

Instructor: local parent and Twisted Trunk instructor Suzanne Monto.

Open to kids of all ages and their families. FREE. Please bring your own mat, if you have one.

Chinatown: A Walk Through History, with the Museum of Chinese in America as part of The Municipal Art Society’s Jane’s Walk NYC and in celebration of Lower East Side History Month

Meet at the Garden and uncover the history of one of New York City’s oldest neighborhoods! This walking tour examines how everyday buildings, public and commercial places, and streets have shaped the community from its origins as the Native American village of Werpoes Hill in 1600 to one of the fastest growing immigrant communities of present day New York City. The tour ends at the Museum of Chinese in America.

This Volunteer Fair is an opportunity for local institutions in the Lower East Side to connect with local residents, both old and new, who would like to donate their time and skills to amazing programs.

Residents and visitors of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to come for the Volunteer Fair and get to know the human faces behind the local institutions, as well as see the breadth and depth of the cultural organizations in the Lower East Side.

This program aims to give access to additional information about how to create enjoyable, fulfilling work opportunities for volunteers and enhanced programming for institutions.

Help build your community alongside the arts and cultural workers in the Lower East Side!

Daffodil Tie-Down

Help tie down daffodil foliage to make room for herb and vegetable plants started from seeds earlier this year. We need all hands!

This technique allows the daffodils to continue manufacturing food for next spring’s bloom.

NYC Kids Project Puppet Show
Inclusion, Respect, Connection

The NYC Kids Project Puppet Show features child-size hand and rod puppet characters in theatrical scenes, focusing on disability awareness, anti-bullying issues and character development. The teaching artists presenting the show encourage audience participation through facilitated dialogue, allowing the students in the audience to learn from interacting directly with the puppet characters. Program length: 45 – 55 minutes.

Open to the public. Best for second- through sixth-graders. FREE.

Elizabeth Street Garden is wheelchair accessible.

Seeds of a Memoir Writing Workshop

This workshop, led by Barbara Horn, English professor emerita at Nassau Community College, includes exercises that help us discover, reflect, recall and create. With the Garden as backdrop, participants are encouraged to remember long-ago and perhaps far-away places as they begin work on memoir writing. Reading pieces with other members is encouraged but not required.

Live music, dancing, bubbles and fun with volunteers actress-singer Lauren Ruff and guitarist Pete Armstrong. We’ll provide music and percussion instruments for your little ones to sing, dance or play along. Bring the family and pack a picnic lunch for afterward.

Kids of all ages are welcome, but the music is geared especially towards newborns through 4-year-olds. FREE.
