Second Annual Harvest Festival

Oct. 25, 2014

More than 2,000 neighbors and friends, adults and children celebrated at Elizabeth Street Garden’s Second Annual Harvest Festival on Oct. 25. Our community enjoyed a day of fun activities for all ages, live music, and lite bites and refreshments donated by neighborhood businesses.

We thank Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick and Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer for attending and supporting our Harvest Festival.

Children (and adults!) wore Halloween costumes, decorated pumpkins and painted faces; gardeners planted daffodil bulbs donated by New Yorkers for Parks with tools provided by GrowNYC; jack-o’-lanterns were judged funniest, scariest and craziest; delicious local meals and attentive personal services were raffled off; attendees shared online at the Photo Gazebo; and several wheelbarrows full of canned vegetables collected to benefit the The Bowery Mission’s Thanksgiving Meal rolled away.

The Harvest Festival was the culmination of our Bees, Butterflies & Worms neighborhood-led initiative which began in spring to educate children and adults about eco-gardening, habitat creation, urban wildlife and sustainable stewardship, with funding provided in part by Citizens Committee for New York City.

Tremendous thanks to all of the volunteers, activity sponsors, musicians and contributors who helped make this year’s festival a tremendous success!

 Historic little Italy Walking Tour

Historic Little Italy: One Family’s Story
May 3, 2014

Elizabeth_Street_Garden_Jane's_Walk_NYC_Flyeras part of The Municipal Art Society’s Jane’s Walk NYC and
in celebration of Lower East Side History Month

This Saturday the Garden will host a walk through historic Little Italy as part of The Municipal Art Society’s Jane’s Walk NYC. This weekend long, city-wide series of free neighborhood walks honors the enduring legacy of urban activist, Jane Jacobs, who championed the uniqueness of neighborhoods and celebrated the “locals” who keep them strong, livable and resilient.Author Laurie Fabiano is back in the Garden and takes us on this neighborhood walk based on her own family narratives and captured in the bestseller Elizabeth Street. In her novel she tells a remarkable, and previously unheard, story of the Italian immigrant experience at the start of the twentieth century and paints a vivid portrait, not only of immigrants making a new life in a new world, but also of the vicious criminals who preyed on them. For detailed information about Jane’s Walk and a full list of events, visit mas.org/janeswalknyc.

Garden Clothesline

May 3 – 31, 2014

Elizabeth_Street_Garden_LES_History_Month_Flyerin celebration of Lower East Side History Month

MAY IS LOWER EAST SIDE HISTORY MONTH

Throughout May, the Garden is participating in LES History Month — a celebration of the rich and diverse history of the Lower East Side. Conceived by LES-based arts and community groups, LES History Month aims to connect our present to our past, exploring how our history can inform and inspire our future.

The Garden will join other LES organizations, in collaboration with the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space, and exhibit a Garden Clothesline illustrating the history of the site as a social and civic center for our community. The Clothesline will hang through the month of May.

LES History Month opens with Chalk/LES, a weekend-long participatory project to bring LES history, art and stories onto the streets of the neighborhood. On Saturday, May 3, the Garden will serve our community as a public chalking site to encourage passersby to participate with their own stories and images of the LES. Chalk provided!

For additional information about Lower East Side History Month and an event calendar, visit leshistorymonth.org.
